June 2024 – Word from the Board
June is certainly my favorite month as school is out, and we have the whole summer to look forward to! Backyard barbeques, farmers’ markets, swimming, golfing, enjoying all the bike trails in and around Ames, and so much more. In June our community comes together to celebrate Pride Month, Juneteenth, and of course all the dads! We look forward to offering spring produce such as asparagus, spinach, peas, and tender greens – organic and from local producers whenever possible. As we move through the growing season in Iowa, stay tuned to our e-news and socials for seasonal arrivals.
June also means Member Appreciation Month! Anytime this month, members and student discount can save up to 15% on one regular priced shopping trip. Celebrate with us on June 22 for our June Member Appreciation Day! Join us from 10am-2pm for local vendors, giveaways, kids’ activities and prizes, free samples, and more! We will also be reaching out to learn about you – our co-op family – to hear and record your personal stories and memories for our 50th anniversary archive. Look for our Co-op Memories booth at our June 22nd celebration and interact online on the website and socials.
With celebration in mind, we are busy planning our groovy Golden Jubilee party as Wheatsfield celebrates its 50th anniversary on September 15! It is utterly amazing how far Wheatsfield has come, and my hat is off to the visionaries who started this cooperative as well as all the community and board members who have supported its mission over the years. It is so much more than a grocery store – Wheatsfield is a place where neighbors become friends, where ideas are shared, where the spirit of cooperation thrives, and people are empowered to make informed decisions about their health, their environment, and their impact on the world.
SO, SAVE THE DATE: September 15th, 12-4pm in our parking lot – it’s going to be our greatest celebration ever because of you!
I remember when we would order food and a truck would go to Minnesota, bring back food in bulk. We would go to basement at ISU building and bring containers to fill cut cheese from wheel, scoop natural peanut butter from big barrel, honey, flour. It got so popular with more than the “earth cookies”, we rented a store Ames downtown. No and had a membership fee and volunteered hours. It was a real community. I we moved in 1980. I recently moved back to my hometown of Coon Rapids and just out of curiosity I googled natural food stores. When I saw 50th anniversary on website, opened 1974 I got very nostalgic. I definitely will mark my calendar
