August 2024 Word from the Board
Jeff Kushkowski, Wheatsfield Board Member
August is one of my favorite months. Sweet corn is abundant, leading to an increase in my use of dental floss. The new semester at ISU also kicks off at the end of the month, bringing a renewed energy to the town. Students are gearing up for school, excited about back-to-school shopping, while parents eagerly anticipate their children heading back to class. Many of us are also looking forward to the start of football season and the latter half of the baseball season.
Things are happening at Wheatsfield this August as well. Our Tiny Deck Concerts will continue every Friday evening throughout the month, and this month’s Change for Community recipient is the Iowa Wildlife Center. Additionally, August is a Wellness Whenever month, offering member-owners and student discount program participants 15% off one supplement and body care shopping trip.
Looking ahead to September, we’re celebrating our 50th Anniversary with our Groovy Golden Jubilee on Sunday, September 15, 12-4pm. It promises to be our biggest party to date, so mark your calendars and join us in the celebration! Stay tuned to our weekly e-News for more details.
August is also when we select candidates for the Board of Directors. This fall, three directors will be elected, with the results announced after the annual meeting on October 15. Reminder, we are also searching for a student board member position appointed by the Board of Directors.
The Wheatsfield Board of Directors is responsible for hiring and evaluating the general manager, reviewing policies, monitoring the organization’s financial health, and engaging with members to support the co-op’s mission and vision. As a board member, you will help guide the direction of a local, multimillion-dollar business that contributes to the local economy and aims to be “Everyone’s favorite place to shop, learn, and connect.”
The co-op thrives on the input and enthusiasm of our members who serve on the board. As a cooperative, we depend on a rotating group of member voices to serve on the board. Your participation helps advance the goals of the co-op.
So, as you enjoy sweet corn, prepare for school, and purchase those football tickets, consider giving back to the co-op by running for a Board seat. Information and applications for elected and student board positions are available here. The deadline for applications is Monday, August 12, by 11:59 pm.
Enjoy August!
