DESCRIPTION:Valerie Stallbaumer\, licensed acupuncturist for Story County Medical Center\, will explain how you can use the principles of Oriental medicine to improve your health.  This long-established health care system is based on the 5 elements of how Nature functions.  Learn about your health status using a hand-out provided that summarizes these 5 elements.  Food choices\, herbs\, acupuncture\, and energy-building exercises will be discussed.  Some case studies will be reviewed from Valerie’s 20+ years’ experience covering a wide range of health issues. \nMeet the Instructor! \nValerie Stallbaumer graduated with a B.S. degree in biology and chemistry from Washburn University in Topeka\, KS and earned an M.S. degree from the University of Oregon in Eugene\, OR. Valerie taught science topics at the secondary level and followed her passion for science by working in research labs. After doctors could not help her recover from an illness diagnosed as acute viral fatigue\, she was advised to try acupuncture. The experience and quick recovery inspired her to investigate a career in Oriental medicine. She graduated from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine in 1997 and began her practice in Iowa where she works for the Story County Medical Center and has a clinic location in Ames.

DESCRIPTION:In this hands-on workshop\, discover the art of upcycling as you create whimsical decorative gnomes from CDs\, fabric scraps\, and yarn to keep or share. You’ll also learn to assemble practical “Kindness Kits” from upcycled materials filled with essential first aid and hygiene supplies\, which will be donated to local non-profits serving at-risk community members. This class blends creative crafting with a meaningful opportunity for community support. \nMeet the Instructor! \nShelene (Shelly) Codner has been with the Iowa Waste Exchange\, a free\, confidential and non-regulatory program of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for 23 years\, prior to that she served as the Director of the Butler County Solid Waste Commission. Currently she serves as the program manager and also as an Area Resource Specialist for Area 2 which includes the following counties: Boone\, Cerro Gordo\, Clarke\, Decatur\, Dallas\, Franklin\, Hamilton\, Hancock\, Hardin\, Madison\, Polk\, Story\, Warren\, Winnebago\, Worth and Wright Counties. \nShelly is an award-winning writer\, published children’s author and contributing author to the New York Times best-selling series\, Chicken Soup for the Soul. Shelly also serves as volunteer regional editor of Green Teacher magazine based in Toronto. Aside from reading and writing Shelly has many hobbies and interests\, sewing\, quilting\, crocheting\, knitting\, crafting\, gardening\, cooking\, baking\, photography and spending time outdoors and with family\, Shelly’s favorite pastime by far is being with her grandchildren. \nShelly lives on a farm in rural Iowa with her husband of 38 years.

Join us at Bronwyn’s backyard (our resident chicken whisperer and co-op superstar) for a beginner-friendly class all about building a basic coop\, caring for your feathered friends\, and embracing the chaos of backyard poultry. No experience needed\, just a sense of humor and maybe a love of omelets.\nThis class will take place at Bronwyn’s back yard. You will receive an email the week before class with the address and parking instructions. We will supply sunscreen and bug spray. Please wear appropriate attire and footwear for an outside class. \nMeet the Instructor! \nBronwyn Beatty-Hansen is a native of Emmetsburg\, Iowa. She moved to Ames to study Political Science at ISU\, and is happy to call Ames home. Bronwyn is the Operations and Human Resources Manager\, and one of the Wine & Beer Buyers for Wheatsfield Cooperative. DESCRIPTION:Love salsa and wondering what to do with all your tomatoes? Join our local canning expert for a fun\, instructional class all about making and safely canning a variety of salsas—including classic tomato\, fresh pico de gallo\, and fruity twists. You’ll learn the basics of water bath canning\, get the inside scoop on preserving seasonal produce\, and of course—snack on plenty of salsa samples along the way. This is a demonstration-style class\, so come for the skills\, stay for the chips! \nMeet the Instructor! \nSara Reece is a long time enthusiast for all things food preservation. It all started with growing up in a huge family where her mom did a lot of canning and freezing. As an adult\, her continuously achy joints led her to adopt a whole foods diet and she’s never looked back as her symptoms abated. The slow-food concept (food should be grown and bought locally\, prepared with care\, and consumed with appreciation) is one that rings true to her spirit. Sara is delighted to share her expertise in canning and fermentation with her Co-op community.
