Caroline Krejci, Board Member
Summer is finally here! I don’t know about you, but I’ve been thoroughly enjoying all of the delicious fresh produce – peaches, watermelon and local strawberries, to name just a few. With the long-anticipated store expansion now complete, we have an outstanding meat and fish counter to supply backyard barbecues, as well as a fabulous expanded deli for those hot days when you don’t feel like cooking. In an effort to stay cool, I personally have been taking full advantage of the Co-op’s abundant ice cream offerings.
As a member-owner, you are no doubt already well aware of the many ways in which Wheatsfield adds value to our community. Our Co-op is committed to providing our community with fresh, healthy, and locally-sourced food, as well as supporting the producers of this food. The store is not only a great place to shop but is also a place to meet friends and neighbors, whether you’re sharing a meal from the deli or participating in a class or event. Hopefully you’ve had the opportunity to take advantage of the beautiful new seating area and deck!
Perhaps you’ve wondered about how you can get more involved with the Co-op and find new ways of contributing to our community. Have you considered running for the Board of Directors? The Board works together with Wheatsfield management and staff to ensure that the needs of our member-owners are being met. The Directors work as a team to set policy, hire and evaluate the general manager, maintain the fiduciary responsibility of the Co-op and represent the membership to create a vision for the Co-op’s future. The Board generally holds one two-hour meeting each month. We are periodically involved with activities that allow us to interact with our community and get better acquainted with the Co-op’s membership, such as the Fourth of July parade and “Coffee with the Board” events. I personally have found serving on the Board of Directors to be a very rewarding experience, allowing me to learn more about our Co-op, to meet many of our members, and to work alongside a group of caring and committed people who make up our Board.
All member-owners have the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates online or by paper ballot in the weeks leading up to the Annual Meeting, which will be held on October 25 this year. I hope that you will consider running!
